NCAA Women's Basketball Fan Map: How the Country Roots for Women's College Basketball

March 20, 2024 by Vivid Seats

As the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament tips off, new data from Vivid Seats explores America’s rooting interests by identifying the top selling women’s college basketball team in each county.

The Tennessee Lady Vols are not only one of the most accomplished programs in all of college sports, they are also No. 1 with the fans.

Legendary head coach Pat Summitt coached the Lady Vols from 1974-2012, capturing eight titles during that stretch and amassing a die-hard fan base. The Lady Vols claim 71 counties in Tennessee.

With regional programs dominating their corners of the country, it’s clear that there’s no shortage of passionate women’s college basketball fans that are willing to see their favorite team live. The average ticket price for women’s college basketball is up 44% compared to last season, and fans are traveling 22% further to catch a women’s college basketball game this season.

To find the top women’s college program in your county, according to Vivid Seats sales data from 2015 to present day, view the interactive map below.

The Caitlin Clark Effect

It’s often the players on the court who drive the success for the country’s top college basketball teams, and University of Iowa star Caitlin Clark has been a big draw over the past four years. Demand for Hawkeyes tickets is up 224%, according to the average price, since Clark joined the team in 2020.

UConn Dominates the Northeast

UConn's fandom footprint stretches far beyond The Constitution State.

The Huskies are the most popular team throughout most of the Northeast, claiming counties in New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Jersey and New Hampshire.

Geno Auriemma’s program has enjoyed a nearly unparalleled level of success spanning decades and the list of stars it’s produced is prodigious.

Household names like Rebecca Lobo, Sue Bird, Dianna Taurasi, Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart help cement UConn as one of the country’s most successful teams.

The SEC Is Strong

South Carolina, LSU and Mississippi State each dominate their respective states while enjoying a foothold in adjacent states as well.

Led by head coach Dawn Staley, South Carolina captured the national title in both 2022 and 2017, holding off Mississippi State in the title game. Kim Mulkey, who has three titles on her resume while she coached Baylor, now has one with LSU after winning the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament.
