Let's break down the new College Football Playoff structure. Twelve teams will be selected for the Playoff. The five highest ranked conference champions will make the Playoff, with the four highest ranked of those teams being awarded seeds #1-4 and a first round bye. The fifth-highest ranked conference champion and seven other teams selected by the committee will round out the playoff teams and play in the first round. For the teams playing in the first round, the highest seeds will host the lower seeds at their home field.
The four teams that win in the first round will move on to the quarterfinals to play the teams who received a bye. Each year, quarterfinal and semifinal Bowl Games will rotate between the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose, and Sugar Bowls. From there, four teams will move on to the semifinals and the winners will play in the College Football Playoff Championship. There is no limit on how many teams from one conference can make the College Football Playoff. However, there are no guaranteed spots for any conference. There is also no minimum ranking for the five highest ranked conference champions, who are guaranteed spots. For example, if the fifth ranked conference champion is ranked #24, they will still be given a spot over teams ranked #12-23.
