The upcoming tour will mark Jackson’s first concert venture in four years--a welcome return to the stage for this excellent live performer.
Since we have to wait until August for the tour to kick off, we decided to fill the time by looking back at the history of amazing Janet Jackson outfits from her previous tours, starting with her debut trek in 1990.
1990 - Rhythm Nation 1814 World Tour
Jackson’s first major venture, the Rhythm Nation World Tour, was a huge milestone for the singer, then just 24 years old. One of the tour’s most memorable performances, of the eponymous song “Rhythm Nation,” featured the iconic Janet Jackson outfit made famous in the song’s acclaimed music video:
During this first major tour, Jackson also looked amazing on stage in this fitted black coat.
1993-95 - Janet World Tour
The tour in support of the 1993 album “janet.” featured a host of memorable Janet Jackson outfits. Renowned celebrity stylist Tanya Gill designed more than 100 costumes for Jackson and her back-up dancers for the two-year venture. The range of wardrobe was impressive, covering everything from typical ‘90s fashion, like crop tops and flannel shirts…
…to heeled moccasin boots…
…to white, feathered top hats.
1998-99 - The Velvet Rope Tour
All Janet Jackson outfits from The Velvet Rope Tour were designed by David Cardona. Many of the nine costume changes drew from an androgynous style, with plenty of tailored suits on hand throughout the evening.
2001-02 - All for You Tour
The All for You Tour was another veritable spectacle for this pop star’s fans, with at least nine Janet Jackson wardrobe changes in every show. She sported at least two fedoras during this 2001-02 trek, including the one that complemented this memorable all-white outfit:
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Jackson also donned this all-black costume, complete with a leather cropped bustier.
2008 - Rock Witchu Tour
2008’s Rock Witchu Tour was launched in support of Jackson’s most recent album of original music, “Discipline.” Janet Jackson’s costumes for the show were designed by world-renowned fashion designer Donatella Versace, so it’s no wonder that fans got to see Jackson perform in some amazing outfits, including a show-stopping red gown that was worn during performances of lower-key ballads.
She also sported this killer gold jumpsuit while she performed some of her most popular throwback gems.
2011- Number Ones, Up Close and Personal World Tour
Jackson’s most recent live venture to date, the 2011 tour was a celebration of her greatest hits. Costumes designed by Robert Behar earned much acclaim, including this skin-tight futuristic catsuit.
Another top Janet Jackson outfit from the trek was duplicated for her backup dancers, forming a mini dance army.
Even when Jackson was just wearing a tank top and jeans, she proved she can dominate on stage.
