What is the Sports Equinox? 

A somewhat rare occurrence for the sports super fan–the Sports Equinox is the ultimate day for sporting events where NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL games all fall on the same date, often in the month of October. Other leagues and sporting events have even gotten in on the action in past years, creating a “Super Sports Equinox” like in 2021.

The first Sports Equinox was documented on October 17, 1971, and has been an exciting sports tradition to tune into ever since. Some years can experience multiple Sports Equinoxes while other years may experience an Equinox drought. There was once a 16-year gap without a Sports Equinox from 1985 until 2001. Now, with the addition of “Thursday Night Football,” varying dates for the World Series, and start of the NBA season, we are lucky enough to have at least one of these sporting phenomena almost every year. 

When is the Sports Equinox This Year? 

The 2024 Sports Equinox will take place on Monday, October 28. All four leagues, the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL, will combine for a total of 21 games on Monday – including 11 NBA games, eight NHL games, one NFL game, and one MLB game. Across the “Core Four,” ticket demand for the Sports Equinox has increased 65% compared to last year’s equinox.

Must See Games of the Sports Equinox  

The Sports Equinox is creating a lot of buzz with sports fans traveling 87% further this year to catch a Core Four game compared to last year. In a sea of 21 games during the Sports Equinox, Vivid Seats found the most in-demand matches, via average ticket price, that fans are gearing up to see.
