A Tale of 4 Hamiltons: Breaking Down the Award-Winning Musical in 4 Different Cities

August 22, 2017 by Stephen

4 Hamiltons

With its Los Angeles debut on Aug. 16, Hamilton premiered in its fourth U.S. city since its 2015 opening on Broadway in New York. The Lin-Manuel Miranda creation has been a hit every step of the way, enjoying sold-out audiences in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

And while each city presents a slightly different version of the critically acclaimed drama, the musical continues to be the top–selling musical in its host cities. Factors including ticket price, venue and cast give fans in each city a unique variation of the Hamilton experience.

Vivid Seats breaks down how this Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning show compares by city – from cost to venue - and what fans can expect in their varying vibes:

NEW YORK

Average Ticket Price: $656

Venue: Richard Rodgers Theatre

Location: 226 W. 46th St.

Capacity: 1,319

Debut: August 2015

The Rub: This has been Hamilton’s home since its-Broadway debut in 2015. Since then, Hamilton in New York has consistently been most of the most coveted tickets in the entertainment industry. The New York production has hosted a veritable Who’s Who of celebrities in the audience, something that Miranda’s Twitter feed often documents. The venue has special significance, since Alexander Hamilton himself spent much of his life in New York. No matter where Hamilton heads in 2018 and beyond, there’s something inimitable about its New York performance.

CHICAGO

Average Ticket Price: $349

Venue: PrivateBank Theatre

Location: 18 W. Monroe St.

Capacity: 1,800

Debut: Sept. 2016

The Rub: Hamilton was already immensely popular by the time it opened in the Windy City. Its Midwest home—PrivateBank Theatre—is one of Chicago’s most storied venues. Open since 1906, it has played host to Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots and Book of Mormon. Just a few blocks away from Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago, Hamilton at the PrivateBank Theatre is in the heart of Chicago’s downtown and seems to carry a special connection to the city. After the Cubs captured the World Series last November, the cast treated theatergoers to a rendition of “Go Cubs Go” the next night:

SAN FRANCISCO

Average Ticket Price: $505

Venue: Orpheum Theatre

Location: 1192 Market Street

Capacity: 2,203

Debut: March 2017

The Rub: Hamilton wrapped a five-month run in San Francisco earlier this month, and the show’s success had a fingerprint on the entire neighborhood: Local businesses reported a 15- to 20-percent lift thanks to the sell-out crowds that the show regularly welcomed. In the NorCal region that boasts some of the world’s most expensive restaurants, it’s unsurprising that median tickets for San Francisco’s rendition of Hamilton $505 according to Vivid Seats ticket data—second highest behind the New York production. In 2019, Hamilton will return to San Francisco.

LOS ANGELES

Average Ticket Price: $474

Venue: Pantages Theatre

Location: 6233 Hollywood Blvd

Capacity: 2,703

Debut: August 2017

The Rub: After wrapping up in San Francisco, Hamilton rolled south (no easy task, requiring more than 100 people and 14 trucks) to the heart of Hollywood, where production has begun at the historic Pantages Theatre, which has been home to likes the of The Lion King, Wicked and Rent. At more than 2,700 seats, the venue will be the largest that has hosted Hamilton and is more than twice the size of the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York. There’s something fitting about being able to take in the country’s most popular musical in the entertainment capital of the world.
