The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team which plays in the eastern division of the American League in Major League Baseball (MLB). Their eastern division opponents include; the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and the Toronto Blue Jays. The New York Yankees play home games at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, NY.
The New York Yankees are perhaps the most storied, and by far the most successful sports franchise in history. The Yankees, then call the Highlanders joined the American league in 1903. In 1913, the Highlanders moved to the Polo Grounds and were renamed the Yankees.
Since then, the New York Yankees have gone on to appear in at least one World Series in every decade since 1920. The Yankees were prosperous through the 1960’s, but did not earn a trip to the World Series between 1962-1975. A group headed by George Steinbrenner then bought the Yankees in 1973. New York failed to make the playoffs from 1982-1995 amidst a flury of personnel and managerial changes. They once again returned to dominance in 1996, winning an AL pennant, and going on to win the World Series four times in seven years. In their history, the Yankees have won 26 world championships, distinguishing themselves as the premier franchise in all of baseball, and possibly all of sports.
Throughout the Yankees’ success, Yankees fans have had the pleasure to watch some of the greatest names in the sport. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gherig, Roger Maris, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, and Reggie Jackson, and more recently, Roger Clemens, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez just to name a few.
Amazingly, Yankee Stadium was built in only 284 days and was ready for opening day in 1923, after the Yankees were forced to vacate the Polo Grounds. The structure was built to fit more than 70,000 fans, and the first game saw 74,200 people show up for a look at this ballpark that was now being called “a stadium.” Yankee stadium underwent numerous modernization projects, but it is not all that different from the Yankee Stadium of the late 1960’s. For any fan who appreciates baseball history, wants to see a premier club play, or just wants an open seat somewhere to enjoy an afternoon of baseball, tickets to a Yankees game in the Bronx are definitely in order.
